tooo high not to blog

The ecstasy of last nights win, has me high on an adrenaline rush like I've never experienced before..... well, not really. The title might be based on something completely different all together.... man.

However, SFC won again. The first back to back wins manufactured by the club in BPL history, and the first time the club has had a winning record in club history.

It's only week three, so nobody's getting too excited, and we didn't win in the manner in which we hoped, so we are humbled after our week two triumph.

To the Heroes credit, they played well, and caused for a lot of our misfortune. On the same note, we made plenty of errors, and were still able to dictate the pace of the game, while not at our best, to walk away with the win.

Next week brings another huge challenge for SFC, and although the Power Rankings will sway in SFC's favour based on the season thus far, one would be silly to consider SFC the week four favourite. .... but ya know what?? we're fine with that.

'Round the Traps

In lieu of actual original content, lets just cut and paste from some emails and put some links in there ... and what the heck, we'll pass comment too.

-------------------------------------------------------------

The Dojo blog hits 100 posts. This is a fun blog, forever in the shadow of the Brisbane Ultimate Blog to be sure, but while we do our best to maintain some sort of diplomatic statespersonship, Sensei calls it as he sees it, even if a possible subheading for the work is 'let's bag everyone else, especially the BPL TD (bless him), while we talk ourselves up and maintain a persecution complex'. Hmm, did we say we only try our best over here? But seriously, well done, particularly since most of the posts are substantial, rather than some of the guff we post (but then, we do aim for 'mostly daily'). And it was UQ Passion with the persecution complex after all.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile our spies report that a bunch of the Heroes Ultimate Club went in last weekend's Bridge to Brisbane. The stats below may give the Slamtown some tips for who's fit and who ain't for their game tonight:
Chris Brown DOMINATED the club results at 00:47:33 (a good 6 seconds ahead
of the runner up Pete Allen). Closely followed by Gavin Croft at 00:49:12, and the bearded Brown brother at 00:50:21 (in my book, qualifies for a RED runner next year). Leading the second half of theroster is Michael Strelan at 00:56:23, and a very close competition between Miss Laura Sonter and Craig Behrendorff at 00:57:05/ 00:57:45respectively. Your 2IC (I have the number 2 jersey for a reason) [edit - that's Sean there] enjoyed the leisurely pace of 01:02:23 (twenty seconds slower than Iwould have liked), with Adam Baker behind me at 01:06:50 and Mansauce spending too much time chatting and not enough time running to come in at 01:26:12."
You go, Mansauce. At least we can be confident you were chatting to chicks.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Elsewhere, there's new research, this time from the USA Track and Field gang suggesting that stretching is a waste of time, and you should just be throwing you fool.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Mixed Nats 2010 has a website!

------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, we figure we should share a tip with photographers out there. We here at the Brisbane Ultimate Blog figure that getting photos of the teams is a simple way to record history. Your grandchildren playing for Gold Medals at the Astrolympics will be able to search for you and all that. But its always been a bit of a challenge to get decent ones, and quickly when some players don't give a shite. But the team shots at Halibut seemed to come out better than usual. Why you may ask? This time around, we stumbled upon the best way to get half the team to make the front row and half make the back row. "Women in the front and lads at the back, please" worked very well for a mixed tournament, but easily you could have "O team in front and D team at the back" or something like that. This saved several minutes of the usual fumbling around, and made for relatively balanced and tidy shots. Next step - get the back row to move slightly right or left to centre up.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally, yesterday was Jack Lilwall's birthday!

WFDF Bi-Annual Rules Review

WFDF has begun it's biannual review the rules of Ultimate, and invite anyone to contribute.

There's a place to make suggestions and discuss the suggestions of others, over here:http://ultimaterules.co.cc/?page_id=1277&vasthtmlaction=viewforum&f=2.0

Personally, while I like having a regular process to review the rules (rather than something 'crisis' driven. And goo don WFDF and those involved for committing and delivering on making it happen), I'm not so keen on every two years.

Every two years is driven by the international playing schedule, and this is probably right for people playing Ultimate at that level.

But for the vast majority of players and organisers, changes every two years is probably too often.

Don't have a solution though, except possibly that while its worth having a discussion every two years, the bias should be towards not changing anything if at all possible, or possibly deferring the introduction of minor changes until the next review (ie to have major updates every four years).

A link to the rules and some cool diagrams which make you feel smart

Once again, it's always useful to point out that Ultimate is self-refereed. You are a referee (yeah Finny you're not the only one who's special). So that means, like Finny attends all his state basketball competitions and sucks up to the big bosses by being so smart, you too must try to be as smart and knowledgeable as you can be - BY KNOWING THE RULES. Sure it's really helpful in a game if you're good at getting your way and winning arguments, this is great, as long as it's done within the rules and guided by your fair intentions which can be found here: http://ultimaterules.co.cc/?page_id=1535

Also, there's plenty of other things to look at while you're on the WFDF webpage, such as this diagram explaining the pull. Pretty cool and very easy to use! There are a number of other diagrams explaining the processes behind picks, travels, and different fouls and infractions.

Cobras

Round One vs Slamtown

So all has been a bit quiet on the Cobras blogging front with the absence of young Reece Stewart to worldly travel for a few weeks.

In his absence, not-quite-so-young James "JJ" Jackson has stepped up the fill the void (at least for the time being). So here is what he had to say about the Cobras first up game, and first ever win, against Slamtown:

Coming back to the graveyard of last seasons final loss, Cobras were eager to bury the pain with a first round victory over Slamtown.

With the departures of receiver Dan Young and cutter Carl (to fierce rivals Heroes), coupled with the absence of Aussie Thunder captain Reece Stewart, there was a sense of uncertainty surrounding how the team would perform.

However, with the addition of experienced head Erhart (?) and the dynamic Kalin (fresh from Canada), expectations were still decidedly high going into the new campaign.

Slamtown, renowned for their raw athleticism and child-like enthusiasm for the game, came out firing, with gun players Steff and Morgs getting crucial connections to trouble the Cobras defense.

At 4-7, a worried Wetnose called a timeout, with slow transitioning and skill errors highlighting the Cobras game.

A concise and punchy pep-talk from Abra honed the teams concentration, with Cobras coming out the stronger after the short break, putting the clamp on the Slamtown offense with a seamless man D.

When the inevitable turns came, Cobras smooth and fast-paced O took no prisoners, with slick cutting from Finn and perfect service from Abra allowing the snakes to take half 8-7. After the break it was a demolition, with Cobras new found maturity allowing the snakes to pile on the points to take it out to 14-7.

A limp charge from the Gold Coast added some respectability to the scoreline, but not enough to get above the water line of double figures, the pain ending mercifully at 15-9.

As$embly Street Field, Sali$bury - QUDA's Only Official Venue

Continuing our spring tour of fields around Brisbane, begun last week with Oakman Park.

As$embly Street Field in Sali$bury is largely unknown to most of Brisbane Ultimate (indeed, the Brisbane sporting scene). But here's the tale ....

Over the past few years, QUDA has been on the lookout for a permanent field in Brisbane.

Most of the fields used by Ultimate in Brisbane are 'owned' by other sports, and then hired by Ultimate users. As many Ultimate players may attest, this leaves us somewhat at the mercy of others (fair enough of course - and it should be pointed out that many field providers take seriously their responsiblity to make the field available to the wider community).

By 'owned' , we mean that most sports fields in Brisbane are owned by the Brisbane City Council, but are on five to ten year leases with a particular sporting club or association. Said sporting club or association has generally invested further in the field themselves, for example by putting lights or clubhouses on them. Some field owners will also invest in and take responsibility for the field surface, while others rely somewhat on Council (hence they are at the mercy of Council's field maintenance schedule). The cost of the lease is however relatively cheap (but of course, don't forget volunteers have spent decades establishing the venues too).

As you may imagine, most field space in Brisbane has been snapped up long ago (eg the Annerley fields have had a soccer club on it since the 1940's). But this hasn't stopped Ultimate folks from keeping their eyes out. Over the years, Ultimate players have made sporadic inquiries with Council about gaining a long term lease over a field, and QUDA is on a very long waiting list.

Earlier this year your blogger made some inquiries with Council and discovered that the As$embly Street Park in Sali$bury, which features quite a nice soccer field and which many locals assumed was owned by the nearby High School, was actually a Council Park.

What was interesting was that Council didn't classify the park as a sporting field, which presumably is the reason it hasn't been snapped up by some other Club or Association. So keep it quiet! (This is probably why it hasn't been posted about before ... and hence the $ for those suitably conspiracy minded)

At the moment, QUDA has dipped its toe in the water (and we'll come back to this dipping) by booking the field every Sunday from 3-5pm from 1 April to 30 September (what is known as a Winter License). This has cost QUDA the grand sum of $28.50 for the six months, so not a bad investment.

Word of the booking has been put around the various organiser types, but as yet we haven't actually gotten people there to play. Partly this is because while the field and grass are very good, the field is hard to get to without a car, and at present has no parking or toilets.

Its also hard to spot - you have to go to the end of AsSembly St (or Ke11ett Rd on the other side of the creek), and then you might just see the field through the trees.

If people feel that the disadvantages of the field could be overcome, and its worth the effort to find some sort of permanent field somewhere, then QUDA's toe dipping is ideally the start of something long term. QUDA needs to renew its booking soon if it wants to extend itself into the Summer six months. Perhaps it should pay more and book the whole day (or someone establish a Salisbury Ultimate Club to be the vehicle). Then for the following Winter book both Saturday and Sunday. And then at the end of 2011 talk to Council about a five year lease and getting toilets put there. And a small storage shed and signage. And a clubhouse and lights and some reshaping and removal of the soccer posts (a big advantage of the field is the lack of residences immediately backing onto the field).

A sort of big vision, but it needs to start with people thinking its a good place and worth thinking about long term, and in the short term establishing our presence there.

So, if you have the time, go for a look some time. Or if you are looking for a regular place to play during daylight hours over Summer, contact JdR (ceo@quda.org) and we'll book you in.

Coaching Course - 17 October

Ever wanted to gain a formal qualification as an Ultimate Coach? Or maybe you were just interested in improving how you teach new people to play?

QUDA is hosting another Coaching Course on Sunday 17 October, from 9am-5pm, at the Annerley Junior Soccer Clubhouse (where BPL and BUML are played).

The course is accredited under the Australian Sports Commission’s National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS).

The course will take a full day to complete and includes practical and theory components. No previous experience as a player is required to take part in this course, nor is any prior knowledge of coaching.

The cost of the course is $50, and includes registration and accreditation fees, lunch, and the course manual.

The course is offered nationally - further information on the course can be found here.

For more information, contact QUDA's Coaching Coordinator, John Coorey at coaching@quda.org

If you are keen but can't make 17 October, contact John anyway - it's helpful to know how much demand there is for future courses.

One Hundred Not Out

On June 12th 2008 the DojoMojo blog took its first tentative step into the Ultimate blogosphere. In that first post we described ourselves as "the oldest, most gloriously history-laden and also most spectacularly well-merchandised team around", and nothing much has changed. Except for the fact that, including this one, 100 posts have taken up their own tiny chunks of server space somewhere out there in the great Google cloud...

Over the past 26 months we've interviewed the biggest names in the BPL, had our team shirt voted one of the best in the world (thanks everyone), written plenty of controversial stuff (none of which we regret in any way), and of course provided video coverage of a multitude of BPL games and two Grand Finals (the ones we weren't playing in) absolutely free of charge.

For those with a statistical bent, or even just the slightest degree of curiosity, or perhaps just wanting to dodge work for a few minutes, here's a few interesting DojoMojo Blog facts:

6,849 unique visitors
29.96% new visits

#1 most viewed post: Sorry Mum (251 visits)
#2 most viewed post: Smells Like Bad Spirit (153 visits)
#3 most viewed post: Worst Huck Ever (147 visits)

Seems nothing rates quite as high as a good old Spirit controversy, eh?!

Visitors have viewed the blog from 43 different countries (including the odd visit from interesting-sounding places like Bulgaria, Saudi Arabia, Lithuania and Laos, among many others).

Top Ten Visiting Nations:

#1 Australia - 6,031 visitors
#2 USA - 341 visitors
#3 Canada - 133 visitors
#4 UK - 59 visitors
#5 Germany - 26 visitors
#6 Hong Kong - 20 visitors
#7 Ireland - 13 visitors
#8 New Zealand - 12 visitors
#9 Brazil - 12 visitors
#10 Japan - 10 visitors

Bear Market Blogging

Seems that most of the BPL blogging community is in hibernation this week (we really hang out for those Power Rankings, Spaz), with the one notable exception of the ever-friendly & lighthearted Heroes media outlet. Okay, so maybe no-one but the Heroes themselves cares that their training has been re-scheduled, and perhaps that's something that might be better communicated via team email rather than worldwide blog post, but nonetheless Carl did manage to put in a trailblazing BPL blogging effort a few posts back... He even had time to grumble about the crumble of the BPL fields - couldn't agree more, Carl.

Hmmm... You know how when you read a Jeremy Clarkson article in the paper he spends at least the first 500 words rambling on about something totally unrelated to the subject of his review? Well we'd been hoping to adopt a similar approach with this post, picking up on shreds of gossip and innuendo from the many other BPL press agencies out there and building some sort of LD-annoying controversy out of it. But reading back over what we've written it appears that we've accidentally succeeded in building a reasonable word count out of very little material, and wouldn't be the least bit surprised if most readers have already clicked away to some of the much more interesting content the internet has to offer... Hi Lee.

Oh okay, let's talk briefly about the game against Heroes last Thursday night. Yes, Sensei C appeared to be in dire need of some laser eye surgery, flailing around for a spinning white blur on several occasions. Too much time staring at the "New Post" screen on the Dojo blog perhaps??? Otherwise it was pretty much the usual situation against Heroes - Dojo turn up expecting an easy win (thankfully with a team this week), then spend the first half doing some lazy trading, lurch into halftime with a dodgy 8-6 (or was it 8-7?) lead and finally decide that games against Heroes need to be won in exactly the same way as against any other BPL team i.e. significant effort and commitment required. So with socks pulled up and appropriate exertion applied the kenshi roll through the second half to a 15-8 win.

Heroes have some useful-looking new recruits this season, and with Matt Boevink now in an on-field Captain-Coach role, they should see some significant improvement in depth of ability and availability of multiple options. However having said that, every second pass is still going to Jangles, and relying on a key player like that is never good for any team. Just look what happened to the Bugs without Mike last season...

Sorry couldn't resist. But hey, if you're going to be so tactless as to advertise yourselves as "Brisbane's current Premier Ultimate Frisbee Team" (which might need a re-write to bring it up to date BTW) you really are asking for trouble...

The Above&Beyond poll is updated above right for a fresh round of voting....

Gold Coast Ultimate

BPL - Power Rankings - Week III

After two weeks of play, a lot is being learned in this young season. And what the bottom line is seemingly saying is that winning is becoming more and more of a cherished delicacy, and predictions are becoming a lot more difficult. This weeks action had Slamtown upsetting previously top ranked UQ in the Gold Coasts maiden win over a UQ opponent in the BPL. The Dojo actually turned up and walked a way with three points for their efforts, and Cobras are the only team to maintain an undefeated mark after only two weeks of play.

This weeks edition of the Power Rankings see plenty of shifts, and the power for now is very much up for grabs, but for the time being…. Here’s how I’d rank em’.

1 (2) Cobras (2-0) (+1)
– After a pleasant conversation with Wetnose after last weeks effort, I can only congratulate him and his team for knocking down the highly touted ‘Mike Machine’. Cobras are the only undefeated team remaining in the comp after only 2 weeks. They face the Dojo this week in what will be an exciting contest and for the Cobras, another GOTW.

2 (4) Slamtown Flatball Club (1-1) (+2) – SFC pulled off the unexpected upset whilst simultaneously recording their first victory against a UQ opposition in BPL play. The flatballers played with 8 men but were effective with their opportunities. Next week against Heroes will be a test for consistency that Slamtown is poised to ace.

3 (6) Dojo Mojo (1-1) (+3) –
Dojo followed up Week 1’s loss with a commanding victory in Week 2 over the Heroes. The casual confines of the Dojo way have seemingly attracted some quality recruits. The Dojo will face newly top ranked Cobras for a shot at revenge from last seasons ousting.

4 (1) UQ Lovers (1-1) (-3)
– Lovers lost a game they were supposed to have won. Yes, Jules and Dan weren’t there, but Lovers just couldn’t get it done. They are no doubt still in the hunt, and will certainly be finding win’s over the course of this season, but for now they are humbled, and will be seeking revenge against a familiar foe as they square of against the stumbling Buggs in week 3 action.

5 (3) Moreton Bay Buggers (1-1) (-2)
– The Buggs were dealt a blow on Thursday as their first ‘proper’ game ended as a loss. Although the Bugg’s are 1-1 they haven’t actually ‘won’ a game yet, and with the Lovers up next they will have their work cut out for them to actually ‘earn’ 3 points in week three.

6 (5) Heroes (0-2) (-1)
- The Heroes are still hoping to upset their opponents, and though a good start against the Dojo wasn’t enough to get them the victory, they continue to improve. The boys in green were not likely stoked to see SFC hit form on Thurs as they are up next for the Heroes.

Moreton Bay BUGGERS

Ouch!

In round 2 of season 2 we played the number 2 team. It was a bit rough really.

The energetic Cobra team went on 2 separate 5 to 1 goal runs during the game, it was too much to handle. From the start of the game to 5 to 1 up we made mistakes at our end and the Cobras capitalised. As our extra players arrived and the team began to readjust to the speed of the BPL in our first game of the season we brought the match right back.

When we had the frisbee to score at 8 to 10 down the game had returned to being a contest however it was not to be and a second 5 to 1 run was too strong for us as the 15 to 9 final score clearly shows.

The Cobra team looked fairly good. They are a team that applies pressure on defense and then take risks on offense with fast and long disc movement. They will continue to be a handful this season.

As for us we know where we are at. Its exactly the same place we found ourselves in during the early stages of last season. We know what we have to do on the field to be successful, however we are still adjusting to the different style of play that is now necessary for us to be competitive.

Encouraging signs this week from two 5th season Bugger work horses with both Manuel and Simon executing blocks and grabs at their athletic peaks. Spectacular fellas, well done. It's also excellent to see that everyone on the team is enthusiastic about evaluating their own performance and setting goals to improve. I'm confident we will quickly return to our potential.

After 2 disrupted first weeks through attendance we are looking forward to another opportunity to grow as a team in this weeks clash with the UQ team.
